World Down Syndrome Day 2017

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), observed on 21 March every year, is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

WHAT IS DOWN SYNDROME?

Down syndrome is a genetic condition when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21. It causes delays in physical and intellectual development It alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with Down syndrome and is the most frequently occurring chromosomal disorder.

Down Syndrome is named after a doctor who first described the disease Dr. John Langdon Down.

Down syndrome is not related to race, nationality, religion or socioeconomic status. The most important fact to know about individuals with Down syndrome is that they are more like others than they are different.

There are three types of Down syndrome:

  • Trisomy 21 (nondisjunction) accounts for 95% of cases
  • Translocation accounts for about 4%
  • Mosaicism accounts for about 1%

People with Down syndrome have an increased risk for certain medical conditions like heart defects, respiratory and hearing problems, Alzheimer’s disease, childhood leukaemia and many more

Psychology Programs @ Texila

Approximately one in every 700 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome – about 6,000 each year. There are more than 400,000 people living with Down syndrome.

In 1983, the average life expectancy of a person with Down syndrome was a mere 25-years-old. Today, it’s 60.

WHY MARCH 21?

The date for World Down Syndrome Day, being the 21st day of the 3rd month, signifies the triplication of the 21st Chromosome which causes Down Syndrome.

A motivating home environment, good healthcare and positive support from family, friends and the community enable people with Down syndrome to lead fulfilling and productive lives.

Living with a rare disease

Rare Disease Day 2017

Millions around the world suffer from rare diseases that attract little attention in the public arena. On February 28th, those who endure these often-neglected illnesses will take centre stage in a global observation of Worldwide Rare Disease Day. This is an important day for increasing awareness of the many challenges unique to rare diseases.

Public Health Programs @ Texila

What’s great about Rare Disease Day???

It focuses on the whole spectrum of rare diseases, and hopefully will prompt increased advocacy and better representation for all rare disorders.

Any illness that affects a small portion of the population is considered a rare disease, also known as an orphan disease. Although rare and genetic diseases, and many times the symptoms, are uncommon to most doctors, rare diseases as a whole represent a large medical challenge.

  • African trypanosomiasis, also known as sleeping sickness is a rare disease that occurs regularly in some regions of sub-Saharan Africa with the population at risk being about 70 million in 36 countries. As of 2010, over 9000 deaths per year have been reported. An estimated 30,000 people are currently infected with an average of 7,000 new infections per year. More than 80% of these cases are in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
  • Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressive (FOP) is an extremely rare connective tissue disease. The disease is caused by a mutation of the body’s repair mechanism, which causes fibrous tissue. As of 2017, approximately 800 cases of FOP have been confirmed worldwide making FOP one of the rarest diseases known.

Here are some facts about rare diseases that you may not already know:

  • Rare diseases impact more people than AIDS and cancer combined
  • 95% of rare diseases do not have a single drug
  • Only 15% of rare diseases have organizations or foundations providing support or driving research

Paying tribute to the millions of families whose daily lives are impacted, and who are living day-by-day, hand-in-hand with rare disease patients.

A Person’s Disease May Be RARE but Their Hope Should Not Be.

Message from the Founder & President – 6th Anniversary of Texila

Dear All,

“We are responsible for what we are, and whatever we wish ourselves to be, we have the power to make ourselves. If what we are now has been the result of our own past actions, it certainly follows that whatever we wish to be in future can be produced by our present actions; so, we have to know how to act.”

I would like to recall the journey from the inception till this moment, every single moment turned out to be milestones and step stones for us. A journey worth recalling, in 2010 when we decided to start a medical university, we decided Guyana as our campus location for various reasons, we were not sure about the reception and acceptance from global student’s community as it was not the trend.

But, things changed for us – students, especially parent’s community across the globe accepted not only Texila American University but also Guyana as a destination. The growth was eventual and the student count as well as representation from the countries kept increasing which motivated us to deliver beyond the committed levels. I would proudly say “we are offering one of the best medical education than anybody else in Americas”.

As any start up organization across the world, we also had initial problems like infrastructure, facilities, faculties and many more. Now, as we have crossed 6 successful years (as of October) of Commitment and Recognitions, I would like to thank every single student and their parents of our initial batches for the confidence they showed in us and for the patience. I vow our success to every single staff here for having stood with us in our tough times.

We continue to improve our teaching, learning and research facilities so as to create the best environment for our academics and students. “Success is never an accident – it is the outcome of Meticulous Planning, Planned Execution and Executed Monitoring” I strongly believe that Right People in Right Positions can create wonders for us and I am proud of my team today and I am confident that the phase of growth will be multiplied in the upcoming Years.

Let me thank you all for your support and insight as we move forward.
