“Ambition never comes to an end”
-Dr. Kenneth Kaunda
Dearly known as KK, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda is the Zambian freedom fighter, African liberator and the first ever President of Independent Zambia. From fighting for the freedom of the African country to bringing in policies for the overall development of Zambia, he has stood as the pillar of present-day Zambia. In the honour of this fine leader who laid the foundation for a modern education system in Independent Zambia, Texila American University has launched the Kenneth Kaunda – TAU Scholarship.
The Educational System in Zambia
Since its independence, Zambia has made considerable progress in the educational sector. It has achieved almost universal primary school enrolment and completion. Apart from developing professional standards for teaching the Government of Zambia is allocating more resources to the education sector. The aim is to increase access to primary, secondary and tertiary education sector.
The UN reported that “More than half of global population growth between now and 2050 is expected to occur in Africa. The population of sub-Saharan Africa is projected to double by 2050”. With this rapid growing population there is a huge demand for medical specialization in African continent altogether. The population is growing at the rate of 1.58% a year. Both the public and private sectors that form the two-tiered health care system are working towards providing better health care facilities to the entire population.
The health care system has seen a motivated growth with the establishments of hospitals or clinics, in-country manufacturing, rising options for micro-insurance, enhancement in health care delivery, increased number of solutions for serving POC health care and intense focus on home diagnostics. With rapid population growth there is rapid urbanization that results in job opportunities in the IT sectors. Business professionals are highly valued for the overall economic growth of the country.
The leader who was at the forefront of Zambia’s struggle for independence from the British Empire, Kenneth Kaunda is also credited with revamping the education system in Zambia. He was the first and the longest serving President of Independent Zambia. A former teacher, he understood the importance of education in building a strong nation and securing the future of a rich country.
He instituted a policy that enabled every child, irrespective of their economic background, to get primary education. The policy that he introduced provided children with free school supplies ensuring that every child attended school. The University of Zambia was opened during KK’s Presidential period. Other tertiary level institutions that opened during his Presidential period focused on vocational skills.
Zambia is facing a high demand for qualified professionals in all sectors. The nation’s goal right now is to meet this demand by ensuring everyone gets equal access to world-class education. Inspired by Kenneth Kaunda’s zeal that has driven the nation to the present state, in terms of education, Texila American University has launched a Scholarship.
